If your home phone service is provided over our fiber optic network, it requires electric power to operate. To avoid a disruption of services during a power outage and to maintain the ability to connect to 911 emergency services, we at Madison County Telephone Company (“MCTC”) provide you with a battery backup as a power source. MCTC installs a battery backup as a power source at every location that has our fiber optic service.
What Your Backup Battery Can – and Can’t – Do for You
The battery backup installed by MCTC is approximately 3 pound and is roughly 8x8 inches. It is normally mounted on the exterior of the home or business. The normal life expectancy during a power outage is 8+ hours. During an extended power outage we suggest that you only use your phone for important calls, in doing this, you will maximize your battery life in case of an emergency. Please note, that the battery backup is only compatible with our equipment; so it can’t power home security systems, medical monitoring devices, and other equipment.
Other items to know and understand
Environmental factors such as temperature can shorten your battery’s useful life. These battery units recharge themselves after power is restored. They typically have a useful lifespan of 3-5 years and periodically they have to be replaced. In the event of a failure, the unit will send an alarm message to the phone company and we will come out and replace it. If you feel that you may be experiencing battery issues please call us at 479-738-2121.
